Minimalism has been going pretty strong for the last 15 years, I remember when I worked in a Kitchen Showroom in Perth in 2008, no one wanted handles in their kitchen it was all about minimalism, but then the hot splash backs were icy blue and lime green acrylic.
Fast forward to the 2010 - 2020 era, cute handles made a come back and the hottest splash back was running your bench top up the wall or choosing a glass that complimented the bench top to keep the kitchen simply beautiful - this option still stands of course.
Enter 2020+ and we can now expect the opposite start to roll in.. Maximalism.
Maximalism is expressive, bold, colourful, patterned like kaleidoscopic interior surrealism - no thats a bit much. Personally I prefer balance.
What this also brings is the return of a fun splash back! Fun tiles, colour, stone that can be as loud as your eyes can take. Lets go...
MOSAIC

I've always looked at mosaics as the jewellery of the room.
Look at this stunning piece of art. There is so much creative option when it comes to mosaics and so versatile, imagine this paired with a beautiful light grey stone bench.
I would consider laying a glass over it to keep it clean and save your weekends from grout scrubbing!
NATURALLY BOLD

The stone bench inc splash back is here to stay and why would it leave. I mean look at this. You get to have a naturally occurring marvel as part of your home and its stunning.
This is about self expression, you live with these choices, so make sure you (not your friends) you, love it and I'm sure they'll love it too.
TEXTURAL BACKING

It is said that textured walls like brick or plaster is going to hit in 2024 so I thought I'd better include it.
Do I recommend having this behind your hob however.. no, we want it to look cool but not at the cost of your free time keeping things clean. Stainless steel behind the hob with its industrial feel, would look beautiful with a wall like this.
WALLPAPER GLASS

I love this idea.
It's traditional yet so contemporary, its creative and fun.
Especially homes that have an open plan, what an incredible way to create a focal point in the kitchen without it being too much, like an extensive piece of art work.
My advice here is to be very honest with yourself and make sure you love the print, also consider organic shapes rather than geometric, the experience is more like being in nature which will have much more longevity and is better for your wellbeing.
MOODY

Moody tones are masculine and versatile.
Because mixed metallics is a stable of maximalism, moody tones work so well and highlight metallic accents for their colour and reflective quality. The also provide the best backdrops for indoor plants!
It is important to note, when it comes to trends, that they come, they go.
They do define what is available in the shops and they do have an impact as they are exposed on a collective level. But this is your space, to enjoy your life as much as humanly possible.
I often have clients worry what their friends will think of their design and I say to them, your friends will see your new project for the first time and have a fleeting response, maybe they will love it, if you don't share the same style, they may not like it and that's ok too. This is about you and what you need to have your home support you in all the right ways.
So let go, have fun and have a fabulous day designing your life x
