MINI PROJECTS THAT MAKE A BIG IMPACT

Change is the only constant.

While keeping things the same may appear to provide safety, a lack of movement can have a person feeling stuck. Changing something in the home can loosen those energies and inspire or attract change to stagnancy.

Here are some small changes you can make to your home that will help shake up those energies and invite in something new, as well as create a feeling of surprise or joy when entering the room.

HELLO FRONT DOOR

I recently started painting my front door, it was charcoal, it was a dark area and I felt when I stepped up to my front door to get home it felt flat. What a way to come home!

So now I have a bright light mandarin door! While I do tend to test ideas on my own home, I wanted to see how a bright door felt and it did not disappoint.

Now it catches evening light, provides a pop of colour to my space and greets me with a friendly hello when I get home. While a bright front door is far from new, so much so it is a Feng Shui principal, it's also a great small project with a big impact and can really effect the way you feel when using it. What colour is your front door and how does it make you feel?

MAKING AN ENTRANCE

Now you have stepped into your front door, what are you greeted with?

Does your front door view meet you with clutter? Or anything at all?

There are many ways to dress an entrance, cabinetry to seamlessly put away bags and jackets and a bench to sit and take off your shoes is obviously an winning option, but even placing some beautiful art on the opposing wall, a lovely console with a pretty bowl to put your keys or a beautiful ceiling hung pendant are just some of the ways you ensure a positive experience before you have barely stepped in the door. An entry is easily overlooked but makes such an impression. Be sure to switch art or place fresh foliage to mix it up and get that sense of change.

FLUFF YOUR STUFF

I have written before about making decorative changes around the home with the changing of the season, throws coming out for colder months, bringing in seasonal foliage or flowers and using your home to embrace seasonal changes. But you don't need to wait either. One trick which is really fun is to mix and match your bedding.

Try mixing up bedding sheets with another colour so you have and mixed bottom and top sheet, pillow cases and duvet sets. Have a play and make your bed differently to how you usually do it. This can cost nothing yet pulls you out of autopilot and presents an opportunity to be creative, as well as a fun new look when entering your bedroom space.

RETOUCH AND GO

Sometimes we think of getting rid of an old piece of furniture, we have had it for ages, its looking a little tired and it was passed on from this person anyway. Or, you can give yourself a little weekend project and either revamp it by bringing it back to its original glory or a fresh lick of paint to reinvent. You can replace handles or feet of a furniture piece and it completely changes the dynamic. Not only will a DIY project give you a sense of satisfaction, it will add a new effect to the entire space and can really change the design of a piece.

RUG UP

I think I must suggest a rug in nearly every project I do. Rugs are incredible for refining a space. They zone areas, change the colour, inject pattern, bounce light, soften sound and create a more enjoyable experience on a sensory level.

Proportion is key. When purchasing a rug for a dining table, there needs to be at least 700mm of rug to give adequate room to push back a dining chair and stand up without the chair coming off the back of the rug. Otherwise it can cause the chair to lean back and looks a little bit like a the table and chairs are on a rescue boat, holding on for dear life.

When purchasing a rug, use masking tape to map out the size to get a sense of how the size of a rug will occupy the space.

Our homes are meant to support us in positive ways, while there are barriers sometimes that bulk in the way of an ideal situation, sometimes a little creativity and resourcefulness can be all that we need to alleviate the issue.

Of course if you are not sure on 'how' to improve a space, there is always help if you need it ;)

Have a fabulous day, designing your life x
