If you were asked to describe a space you do not want to be in, I would take a guess that the answer may look like this. Dark and overwhelming or sterile and soulless.
Both options are opposite to each other but have something in common. they are both void of nature. Lets talk about the elements and how you can consider them to create beautiful and healthy spaces with elemental balance.
Air
Poor air quality can cause allergies, respiratory problems, and fatigue. So one must keep the home's air fresh and clean whilst embracing the energy of air.
Open windows regularly to allow fresh air in.
Use air purifiers or indoor plants to absorb pollutants
Use light colours and ensure there is space to move.
Use texture to create resistance in light colour palettes and pair with natural materials to ground.
2. Water
Too much moisture encourages mould growth, dripping taps have an energetic drain but a home that inspires the ocean or a fresh swim is calming, so ensure water is well balanced.
Use a dehumidifier on wet days/nights.
Fix leaks. Today.
Use blue in finishes and art to reference water with calm benefits.
Use a non toxic linen spray to upholstery and linen to freshen the scent and energetically cleanse the space.
3. Earth
Earthly colours are very popular as they include most neutrals, but too much earth energy can feel lethargic.
Balance earthly colours with colours from the other elements, eg. brown with blue to ensure the space doesn't feel too flat.
Use contrast with earthly colours to ground a space for a calm and homely atmosphere
Art depicting plants and landscapes evoke a natural look and don't need care.
Keep the space clean to avoid dust and dirt build up.
4. Fire
Fire needs to be controlled and minimal so its not too overpowering
Mix fiery colours with grounding neutrals to keep a balance eg rust and brown.
Ensure your kitchen design keeps your cooking appliances clear of the sink.
Use a textured tile around the fireplace to catch the light - not too glossy.
embrace bright and warm colours as an accent.
5. Metal
Look at metal like jewellery to a space.
Keep metals as an accent to lift a space
Temperature of metal matters. Consider the colour as part of the colour scheme
You can mix and match but not always. A bathroom no.
Like a necklace. A metal piece will help the room look finished.
As you can see, a successful interior is all about balance and using our environments to help understand how an aesthetic can make sense is a sure way to intentionally create a healthy space. Our connection to nature is calling us home and listening will mean we can create paradise with it.
Have a fabulous day designing your life x
